A Thousand Lives

The following is a piece written by my late grandmother, Dorothy “Dott” Adair (08/13/1931 – 11/14/2012). A woman of compassion, creativity, talent, intelligence, class, beauty, and entrepreneurship. One of my life’s greatest and grandest teachers.

My grandmother and my daughter

A Thousand Lives

I know I’ve lived a thousand lives
And I will live again
We’ve been together other times
I don’t know where or when

I see the hooker on the street
And know I can’t condemn
I may have walked the streets she walks
And had as many men

I may have been a killer
Or stole that I might “be,”
How can I judge my brother
When he may have pardoned me?

And when I know the depths of love
I’m sure the prize will be,
That all the folks I may have been
Forever will be free.

by Dorothy “Dott” Adair

Sometimes when it seems that grace and compassion are lacking in this world, I take a glance back at this woman and I’m reminded that grace and compassion are where I came from. And it is grace and compassion that I want to bring forth.
